I eat one large meal as my last meal right before I go to bed. My theory:

Eat clean all day, all meals. Your last meal, eat clean, and make it big. Get your rest. Your metabolism slows down when you sleep, yes, but you are also fasting for 8 hours and your body needs something to feed on. I dont want my body feeding on my muscle, so I provide it with a goliath-sized portion of chicken and brown rice pre-sleep.

Has worked great for me for a few years now.

Truth be known, the body has cycles, the three for digestion are:

noon to 8:00pm - Appropriation (eating and digesting)
8:00pm to 4:00am - Assimilation (absorption and use)
4:00am to noon - Elimination (of body wastes and food debris)

So if you are eating past the 'Appropriation phase' you are interfering with, and delaying, the assimilation, and then of course the elimination phases.

Does this mean you will get fat eating before bed? in all likely hood you can, but the important fact is you will not be assisting the elimination phase and therefore adding to the toxic state of your body's health.

Remember alot of your body's vital repairs and elimination are going on during the late hours, for example between 1:00am and 3:00am is when your liver does it's greatest detoxification according to your circadian rythm. If you have bogged down your body with food to be digested and assimilated during the elimination phase then you have taken vital energy away from your repair and cleansing duties and used them to try and digest and assimilate food.

Is this also assuming that you live by a normal schedule (i.e. work a 9-5 job, up at 6 or 7am, sleep by 10 or 11pm)?

I work 2nd shift and my schedule is a little skewed.

Yes that is correct.

Unless you are working a rotating or swing shift your body will adjust, but not if you are doing 2 weeks on days and then 2 weeks on afternoons etc. Probably why one of the reasons people who work alternating shifts don't live as long.

Do you only eat in this 8 hour period?
Or am I looking into that to deeply?

Since most people wake up at 6:00 - 8:00am it would be hard to wait until noon to start eating. But what the best thing to consume during this first 4-6 hours of being awake, and still in the elimination phase, would be to consume only fruit. Fruit is the only food that does not get digested in the stomach, it passes through the stomach and into the intestines within 20-30min, it is then digested in the intestines, so eating fruit will not hamper the elimination phase. And fruit does contain amino acids. If you really want to have tons of energy and vitality this is a great way to go about eating, the way the body intended us to anyways.

Another point to make that most people don't want to hear or will ignore is that we should aslo do proper food combining, which would mean never mixing protein and starch in the same meal, i said starch not carb. Protein requires acid in the digestive juices to break it down, starch requires alkaline, if you remember from chemistry class when acid and alkaline are present togetehr they neutraize each other. So when we eat say steak and potato togther in the same meal the digestive juices continue to cancel each other out, which causes the liver and pancreas to produce more digestive juices, but again they get cancelled out. What happens then is the protein becomes putrefied and the starch become fermented. Putrefaction and fermentation are two elements the human body, under no circumstances, can use. This also delays what should have been 3 hours of digestion to more than 7 hours. And alot of what passes through is undigested food, which wreacks havoc on your body.

I used to fear complex carbs near bedtime but I have found they are OK on gym days, where I have to eat like an animal just to wake up the same weight the next day.

Well an uncooked potato would be fine because it would still be a veg, but once you cook a potato it is now a starch. They don't mix.

You could have steak and veggies. The ideas is to have one concentrated food at a time, and not to mix two. Also fruit should always be eaten on an empty stomach, that means no sooner than 3 hours after a concentrated meal. Veggies can be eaten with carbs or with flesh.

This is of course only if you want healthy and normal digestion, if you don't mind putrefied and fermented foods in your body you could eat whatever whenever.

I will guarantee that's what it is.
People's digestive tracts are out of wack because of the food combination we make, plain and simple. The body has these cycles for a reason, we can go along with them or do it our own way, you will produce the results of your choices.

no no...just dont eat them with anything that would require acid to be realeased in ur body (ie protein) as the akaline that is released to digest the starch will neutralize the alkaline and acid cancelling each other out and having fermenting putrifying shit in ur belly till you pass it...

so yes eat em up in small portions preferrably alone...

or?

MALLET?

HALP!

yes...alone...not with fats...not with protein...maybe some veggies...but WHO really eats veggies ANYWAYS? i dont...lol

seem like it would be difficult getting enough calories in if you're eating only in these time frames and when separating foods so much.

Mallet, do you follow this even as a bodybuilder/lifter?

This is the way i ate as a natural, when i became an enhanced athlete i bought into all the houpla about needing 1.5 - 2.0g of protein per lb of body weight, that you need to eat every 2-3 hours, that you should ahve complete proteins with each meal. During this switch to eating like the massses, i made no more gains than i did eating properly. I think people are more affraid of not getting enough protein than they are of dieing. But do you know a single person with a protein defficiency?

Truth be known, the body has cycles, the three for digestion are:

noon to 8:00pm - Appropriation (eating and digesting)
8:00pm to 4:00am - Assimilation (absorption and use)
4:00am to noon - Elimination (of body wastes and food debris)

I was not really aware of this. Thanks Mallet for the information. Need to properly go through my schedule then.

\"Does this mean you will get fat eating before bed? in all likely hood you can, but the important fact is you will not be assisting the elimination phase and therefore adding to the toxic state of your body\'s health.\"

Certainly worth remembering. I would try to keep this point in mind from now on.
