I am getting ready to restock my protien and it seems that the protien has gone up drastically. I use Anabolic Inovations protien that Bryan2 recomended (the whey isolate) and now they don't offer the mint chocolate and will only offer 10lb. bags for nearly $140!!! I looked at a place called supplementmarket.com and their bulk powder is reasonable, 25lbs. for about $110. Has anyone tried this protien? Bryan2? Hades? Thanks for you help in advance.

Check out trueprotein.com you can make a custom mix if you want and can choose just about any variety of flavor if you want to save 5% use KT021 for a promo code over at trueprotein when you checkout. If you want to really save some money , ON has some pretty good priced 10 lb bags.
http://www.bulknutrition.com/?products_id=63 But honestly after buying some trueprotein I don't think I can ever get anything else.

Yep, it's actually a increase in the demand in milk over in China. Since protein is made from milk , it effects us.

Whey isolate is also some of the most expensive you can get man, which is why you are looking at that kind of price for 10lbs of pure.
I buy ON in the 10lb bags, its about $50, lasts me a while because I dont use a ton of it. You really shouldnt need that much powdered protein. I take 2 scoops in the AM as soon as I wake up 30 min before my breakfast, and occasionally I have to take a scoop post-workout if I have to cook a meal instead of just heating up my chicken and rice. A 10lb bag lasts me 10+ weeks. Not bad for $50.

I agree , I usually have a shake after a workout and breakfast I will have a shake with some UDO's if I'm running late and can't cook. A 5 lb tub will last me quite some time.

I'm a firm believer in real food. I only take a shake for breakfast and post workout. Breakfast only because I'm to lazy to get up a little earlier to eat real food. But I do believe in a PWO shake.

Gentlemen I greatly appreciate your quick response to my question!! For several months I have listened to your suggestions and reviews of different products and although some seriously tanked with me, others worked well. I am wise enough to know that not everything works for everyone and I approach things with caution. I have a lot of respect for you guys and your ability to share and inform those of us with questions and I thank you. As far as the protien at question: Anabolic Innovations whey isolate was the best tasting and palatable that I have tried and ON whey gives me seriously nasty gas. Now while this is hilarious on the job site, standing in the checkout line is a morbid nightmare. I looked up the true protien site that Kuzzin Tarrel suggested and there are so many options I don't know what I am supposed to add. Any help??

What are you looking for in terms of a protein? True Protein is a good site if you do take shakes throughout the day because you can taylor the type of proteins and carbs you get in your shakes to the time of day. I.E. you may want isolate in the morning before breakfast, an isolate-caseinate blend with simple and complex carbs for your post workout shake, and a caseinate/whey blend before bed with complex carbs in it. It all varies when you time your meals really. If you are very busy and cant get all your meals in (which i feel is an excuse anyway, but thats besides the point) and you NEED to get a majority of your nutrition from shakes, you can taylor your blends to the time of day. But again, when do you take the shakes most, and what do you want them to do? Also, what are your goals.

In a nutshell, I don't always have the opportunity to eat my protien in meals like most of the other guys do because of my job and hours. I consider myself lucky to get in a workout in a gym once a week, the rest comes from using I-beam drops or buckets of bolts on the job site. I do take my shakes with me and I usually take mine PWO. I have seen some good gains on whey isolate and that's why I was sticking to that. The trueprotien site has many different types of whey and then you add other things like carbs and vitamins. What do you guys think?

How often do you take the shake, when do you eat your meals usually, how far apart are your meals, etc.
Just to put it out there man, shakes really shouldnt be relied on, and although I work a full time job also, I bring chicken and brown rice in containers in that I can eat every 2.5-3 hours. But if you NEED to rely on shakes, answer my questions, ill try to give you an idea.

Protein is about to, or just recently has, had a reasonablly large increase in price.....around 20-25% at wholesale level is what I have heard but the % change in retail prices where you shop depends on how the reseller responds to the price increase. With decent products it's likely they will pass on the entire cost.
I just bought some yesterday and now my bum hurts. |

In a nutshell, casein will digest slowest by your body those are ideal for before bed, whey protein isolates will hit you faster , you would want those after a workout of breakfast time, egg white protein is almost the median between casein and whey isolate. Digests slower than isolate but faster than casein. Milk Isolate is a blend from milk , I believe it is made from 20% whey isolate and 80% casein. Good for before bed as well and cheaper than casein. If you want, they have pre-made mixes at True protein, you can get them here.Pre Made Mixes (Click Here) I have heard good things about TEAMSKIP Protein Formula

But if you NEED to rely on shakes, answer my questions, ill try to give you an idea. I know that I should eat regular meals, but I'm on the road quite often (which is why I haven't been able to respond sooner) and the hours vary greatly. Quite a bit of hotel living and no access to cooking facilities so I have to rely some what on restaraunts and the roach coaches on the job sites. I will have to make you shake your head (no pun intended) but I do rely on shakes to get good protien. When I am home I do eat healthy meals and am able to workout at a gym. I have relied solely on the whey isolate protien and have had some pleasing results, but that's not to say there is more possibilities which are always there. I read what Kuzin Tarell last wrote (thanks for your input too!!) about the casein protiens and leaning more twords that at night and whey after workouts. I won't make my decision until I hear from you Hades on what your input is and then go from there. Again, I appreciate ALL of you guys and your input here!!! ![]() |

If you are on the road a lot and rely on shakes, is there any reason you can't eat things like canned tuna in water and wheat-based carbs like wheat bread? That would be far better than shakes all the time anyway.
But either way, put it this way. If you want a shake that will last a while in your system, you can go with an isolate-casein blend, with complex carbs added in. This is sold a lot on shelves as weight gainers, and the carbs are mainly maltodextrin. This will put fat on some people, depending on your metabolism. I would really try whatever you can to get full meals in you. If you can pre-make something like whole-wheat pasta or brown rice as carbs, and chicken breasts and tuna as protein, and bring it with you in a cooler or something, just adding ice occasionally, that would be best. I would even do a 2 cans of tuna and whole wheat bread as a meal instead of a shake, its still better. But again, like KT pretty much said, casein is slower digesting but has a lower BV than whey, so your body wont make as much use of it, whereas whey is faster digesting and has a higher BV, so your body makes total use of it. Getting solid complex carbs in is trickey tho. (if you have a stomach, munching on dry oatmeal with water to wash it down works wonders)

Here is a good info from Dante co owner of trueprotein : As you guys know, there is a huge milk shortage...and with that hand in hand goes any kind of milk based protein shortage. Basically there is a food commodity shortage all around, eggs, corn and milk....and those all are base products for other products in the bodybuilding genre-- eggs (egg protein), corn (so many numerous products to name including waxy maize) and of course milk (all wheys, and caseins, predonimantly 90% of the USA's protein powder usage)......I hate to say this but we are hearing there is no quick ending in sight here at all, in fact just the opposite. Where we source from has told us "this isnt ending any time soon, be prepared, the days of low priced whey protein powder is far gone". For example: Our latest quote from our longtime source for Whey protein concentrate came back to us 2 weeks ago with a price that was MORE (yes more) than we currently sell it for on the Trueprotein.com site...We were beyond shocked. It jumped up well over a dollar in price per pound for us to acquire. Ive been keeping an eye on this price wise both locally and online and Im seeing posts by people walking into their local shops and being astounded that their regularly bought 5 pound whey protein powder jug is now 20 dollars more than it was 2 months ago. Doug, Carl and myself have really put our heads together on this one and are scouring the planet to remedy this situation as best we can for the masses....because if this keeps going, I dont care where you buy your whey protein powder from, you might just be buying a 5 pound jug of whey protein powder for 78 dollars down the road here. Thats the reality of the situation via the shortages. I think we are on the right track and we have located a couple of distinct viable proteins that are vegetable based, very high quality, 90% pro percentage, that are an iota away from being complete proteins (and if mixed together--walla).....but unlike whey proteins, these proteins Doug and I have sourced would have very high levels of arginine, leucine and lysine. Key components in the muscle building process, predominatly leucine. The costs of your protein powder bill (no matter where you buy it) instead of continually rising up, would go down substantially with these proteins. The world has been using and doing the research/technology on whey proteins for many decades now because it was cheap, readily available and convenient (byproduct of milk)....thats no longer feasible and the market is changing. These new proteins will most likely now become the norm because of being readily available and the low price....research and technology will now be focused on how to continually make them better (ala whey at one time with mixabilty, digestability, taste). I just came across the patent for the hydrolyzed version of one of the more promising of the vegetable based proteins today. I just want you guys to know we arent standing crossing our fingers waiting for prices to drop with whey production (its not going to happen)...and we are on this hardcore and doing something about it proactively. We have multiple samples of new alternative proteins coming in, im looking at spec sheets on my desk right now....and Doug, Carl and I will get down to business, testing, tasting, sampling different alternative proteins just like we did when we started Trueprotein years ago....to save you guys money in your pockets. I am hoping to get most of the busy work done in August and show you guys what we have come up with here regarding this dilemna a few weeks down the road. |
